It began in 2005 as an open practice at the start of the season, attended by a handful of fans. Today, it's one of the most anticipated events of the year in Aces Nation and a national model for youth action in the fight against cancer.

Lower Merion High School's 10th Annual Maroon Madness benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer is set for Tuesday, December 2 at 7 PM. This year's event promises to be a very special tenth anniversary celebration.

The program begins at 6 PM with live music, entertainment and food provided by Kelly's Bryn Mawr in the front parking lot of the high school. At 7 PM, the school community will gather on Arnold Field for a candlelight walk to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer and then head back across Montgomery Avenue for the evening?s basketball festivities. The event returns to the historic and recently-renovated Downs Gymnasium, the birthplace of LM's great basketball tradition and the inspiration for this year's "old school" theme.

Program highlights will include the introduction of the boys and girls teams, an intra-squad scrimmage, student performances, on-court fan contests, musical entertainment and raffles for LM/Nike gear. The Aces will also welcome several surprise guests. The first 100 guests to donate $5 to Coaches vs. Cancer will receive an event t-shirt and glowstick, sponsored by Hymie's Merion Delicatessen.

Nearly 1,000 community members attended last year?s event, which serves as the official start to Lower Merion?s winter athletics season and the school?s annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising drive. The Lower Merion community has raised nearly $50,000 in the past four years to benefit cancer research. Maroon Madness has been cited by the Coaches vs. Cancer school initiative as a model event and will play host this year to reps from the American Cancer Society and various schools in the area seeking inspiration and ideas in supporting this important cause.
