JJ Hoffstein '10 and the Aces used stifling defense to dispatch Haverford on Wednesday. LM will open the league playoffs on Saturday night at BC against Ridley. Gametime is 7:30 PM.
The Aces capped the regular season in impressive fashion with a 56-23 romp over Haverford on Tuesday. LM held the Fords scoreless through the first 11 minutes of play en route to a 31-5 lead at halftime. All active players on the roster saw court time and 13 Aces scored in the contest, including Colin Eisenstaedt '11, who netted his first career varsity points.
Playing in front of a sparse crowd due to the looming snow storm and an early start time, the Aces may have been tempted to snooze against the struggling Fords. LM clearly resisted that temptation, unleashing a ferocious defensive effort and displaying remarkable energy and enthusiasm throughout. The 13-0 first quarter marked the first time in three seasons that the Aces have shut out an opponent in a full eight-minute frame.
The game conditions provided somewhat of an appropriate metaphor for the Aces' season to date. Few people outside of Aces Nation seem to be paying much attention to the Maroon & White. The Aces -- who began the season with several key injuries and few players with varsity experience -- weren't mentioned among possible Central League contenders in preseason previews, haven't been listed in rankings and haven't made headlines. And yet they enter the league playoffs at 16-5 (15-1 CL), winners of eight of their last nine games, and playing like a team that has something to prove. There is much work ahead, but stingy defense, unselfish play and contributions from numerous players are good ingredients for a postseason push.
The Central League playoffs begin this Saturday evening at 7:30 PM as Lower Merion takes on Ridley in a semifinal match-up at Bala Cynwyd Middle School.
