Harley Williamson '09 had a double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds) in the Aces' 59-52 win

Facing the near-heroic efforts of a superstar in the making, the Aces gritted their teeth and came back from a late third quarter deficit to beat Marple Newtown, 59-52, on Tuesday evening.
Walking into an opposing team’s gym is always be a difficult task; however, the Aces were also forced to contend with sharp-shooting Marple junior, Soutiri Sapnas. Sapnas came into the game as the area's leading scorer at 28 points per contest. Thanks to a collapsing defense and ever-present ball pressure, LM "held" Sapnas to 24 points, four below his season average. Still, Sapnas did his best to keep things interesting until the closing minutes. With LM holding a six point lead with 40 seconds to play, Sapnas stole an inbounds pass and nailed a deep three to cut the margin in half. But Marple would get no closer. Solid free-throw shooting by the Aces kept the Tigers at bay.
As they say, “there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’”. The Aces exemplified this philosophy, distributing the ball well (20 assists to only 11 turnovers), with six players marking their names on the scorecard, including three with double-digit totals.
Senior Greg Robbins did his own superstar routine, leading the way with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Senior Harley Williamson added 15 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Alon Seltzer, who hit a key three-pointer in the fourth frame, finished with 11 points. Junior Oliver Cohen also had a notable performance, notching a team-high 7 assists. Senior guards Nick Bibbs (5 points) and Vince Weldon (2 points) showed toughness on the defensive end.
Finding themselves down 41-37 at the end of the third quarter, Lower Merion turned to Robbins and Williamson to get back out in front and then used free throws to seal the game down the stretch. The Aces outscored the Tigeres 21-11 in the final frame and finished 11 for 14 from the line.
The Maroon & White will look to extend their winning streak to four games as they head to Widener University on Friday for a late afternoon match-up with Philadelphia powerhouse Simon Gratz. Game time is 4:30 PM.
