The Aces, who led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter, downed Marple Newtown 60-45 at Marple on Tuesday night. Senior Eric Barefield led all scorers with 15 points. Junior Kevin Escott scored a career-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds. The game was the first of 2007 for the Aces, and marked the start of a month of Central League play. With the win, the Aces moved to 8-3 on the season and evened their league record at 3-3.
Marple kept the game close in the early going, trailing 9-8 at the first quarter break. The Aces broke things open in the 2nd quarter, closing the half on a 17-2 run, punctuated by a deep, corner three from freshman Oliver Cohen (6 points) and a steal and fast-break layup by junior Carl Johnson (12 points, five assists) as time wound off the clock. The Aces led 45-21 through three quarters before the Tigers exploded in the fourth for 24 points to seal the final margin.
The Aces' next game is at home v. Penncrest on Saturday night. Tip-off is 7:30 PM.
