The Aces used a 22-2 run to roar back from a 12-point third quarter deficit and stormed past Garnet Valley 71-64 on Tuesday night. Jule Brown 15 led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. KJ Helton 16 (16 points, 3 steals), Corey Sherman 15 (14 points) and Asher Barry 15 (10 points) also reached double figures for the Aces.
It was a tight contest through most of the first half and the Aces held a tenuous 32-31 advantage after two quarters of play. Things remained close early in the third, with LM holding a 39-37 lead at the four-minute mark after a layup by Brown. But Garnet responded with a 15-1 burst over the next three minutes, fueled by torrid shooting from beyond the arc and a cold LM perimeter game. The Jaguars drilled three consecutive threes during the stretch, while the Aces failed to score on seven straight possessions. With less than a minute to play in the period and the Aces down 52-40, Helton finally broke the Aces drought, drilling a corner three. Brown followed with a layup to narrow the gap to seven entering the fourth period.
The Aces momentum continued in the final frame. Keyed by a trey from Sherman, driving layups from Brown, Helton and Barry, LM outscored the Jaguars 13-2 in the first three minutes of the quarter to take a 58-54 lead. The Jaguars kept clawing to keep the game tight, but LM slowly began to pull away. The Aces extended the lead to ten points in the closing seconds before a late three by Garnet sealed the final margin.
It was another gritty effort on the road for the Aces, who again were without several key players. LM continues to receive important contributions from a variety of players who are seeing their first meaningful varsity minutes.
The Aces return to action on Friday night in their home opener against Conestoga. Tip-off is 7 PM.
