It wasn’t particularly pretty, but the Aces took care of business Friday night in a 35-23 victory over Haverford. LM led by double figures throughout the second half and remained patient as the Fords used a stall tactic for much of the contest. The Aces limited Haverford to just 12 points in the final 24 minutes of play.

Steve Pendleton ’15 had 11 points to pace the Aces. Jule Brown ’15 added eight points and four assists. Jeremy Horn ’16 (6 points), KJ Helton ’16 (6 points), Eli Needle ’16 (3 points) and Dion Harris ’17 (2 points) rounded out the scoring on a night when points were hard to come by.

LM jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter behind several nifty drives from Brown and Pendleton. But Haverford put on the brakes and attempted to slow the game down in the second frame. The plan worked; they held the ball for long stretches, but could only muster four points in the frame against LM’s stingy defense. The Aces led 21-13 at the half.

In the third quarter, LM opened the scoring on a layup from Horn off a pretty drive and dish from Corey Sherman ’15 to claim their first double-digit lead of the game. Haverford responded by stalling for nearly a minute on the next possession. The pace further slowed after another Aces score and LM was content to hold onto the ball and a 12-point advantage late in the frame as the Fords sat back in half court defense.

With two minutes to play in the fourth and LM holding a 14-point lead, the Fords scored five consecutive points to get as close as nine for the first time since the half. But LM nailed three free throws in the closing seconds to seal the final margin.

With the win, the Aces move to 2-0 in league play and 2-1 on the season. Next up is a match-up with Garnet Valley on the road Tuesday. Tip-off is 7 PM.
