The beloved 2006 state title team makes its return to the court on Friday night.

The 2013 Lower Merion Aces state champion boys basketball team will take on the gold-medal winners from 2006 at this year’s Jimmy Brown ’87 Memorial Alumni Classic on Friday, May 10 at 6:30 PM in the Bryant Gymnasium. Watch BJ Johnson '13, Raheem Hall '13 and the rest of this year’s squad battle Ryan Brooks ’06, Garrett Williamson ’06 and company for Aces Nation bragging rights. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All proceeds from the event benefit Montgomery County’s teen drunk driving prevention programs.

In 2006, the Aces upset Schenley 60-58 in the state finals to claim the program’s sixth state title. This past March, the Aces stunned Chester 63-47 to win a seventh crown. Since that time, many in Aces Nation have debated how the two championship teams would fare if matched-up head-to-head. This Friday should offer a fun, if slightly-skewed perspective.

Brooks and Williamson are both enjoying professional basketball careers in Europe. Many of their teammates, however, haven’t played competitive basketball for years. On Friday, the 2006 team will also be without the services Greg Robbins, who recently completed his Division 1 career at Richmond and will be out of town for graduation weekend. Still, the alumni should have enough firepower to keep things more than competitive. Confirmed participants include Carl Johnson '08, who was one of West Chester University’s top players last season, as well as John Gray '06, Ernest Moore '06, Arian Thompson '06, Adam Ellison '07, Kevin Escott '08 and Steve Meehan '08.

Friday’s event honors the memory of former Lower Merion basketball star Jimmy Brown ’87, who passed away in 2012. Jimmy and his parents, Jim and Kaye, spent more than 25 years going school to school, sharing their very personal story about the devastation of drunk driving. Jimmy was the victim of an accident during his junior year that left him confined to a wheelchair due to head and spinal cord injuries. The first Jimmy Brown Alumni Classic was launched in 2010 by Jimmy’s friend and former classmate Julie Zibelman Wool ’87, along with friends and teammates from the 1986, 1987 and 1988 Aces squads. Two similar events were held in Jimmy’s honor in the 1990’s.

In addition to the main event, Friday’s festivities will also include a “legends scrimmage” featuring Jimmy’s Aces teammates and other LM alumni. The night will be filled with basketball, fun, music, games, and food – all for a great cause.
