The Aces shook off a slow start and earned a solid 60-43 win against a scrappy Haverford squad on Thursday night. After falling behind 8-3 in the first quarter, LM outscored Haverford 32-12 over the next ten minutes to take control of the contest.
Raheem Hall '13 paced the Aces' charge, collecting 16 of his 19 points in the first half. Hall finished 9-10 from the foul line for the game. BJ Johnson '13 (16 points) nailed two threes during LM's first half run and had the highlight of the night, a soaring alley-oop slam in the fourth quarter off a pretty feed from Hall.
Jaquan Johnson '14 chipped in with 11 points off the bench, including a three-point play in the fourth that effectively ended the night for the Fords who had pulled to within 8 points on a gritty late run. Darryl Reynolds '12 (7 points), Mike Robbins '12 (6 points) and Yohanny Dalembert '13 (1 point) rounded out the Aces' scoring. The 60 points allowed by the usually-stingy Haverford defense was a season-high.
The Aces forced 21 Haverford turnovers and kept their composure during a game that at times resembled a rugby match. LM played tough under the glass and hit the deck multiple times to chase loose balls. The defensive highlight was a vicious blocked shot by Robbins who elevated after a pump fake and appeared to hover above the floor in a holding pattern for several seconds before the ball was released.
All in all, it was a good mid-season win in front of a lively home crowd against a game opponent. With the victory, LM improves to 9-2 on the season (6-0 Central League), setting up a big showdown with Upper Darby on Saturday at 2:30 PM at Bryant Gymnasium. The Royals remain unbeaten in league play after a one-point win over Ridley on Thursday.
