Oliver Cohen '10 attacks the rim during the Aces 51-27 win at Upper Darby
The Aces opened the season with a bang, racing past Upper Darby 51-27 on the Royals' home court. Alon Seltzer '10 led all scorers with 14 points, shooting 5-6 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line. Backcourt mate Oliver Cohen '10 had nine points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Aaron Staley '11 (10 points, seven rebounds) and Mike Buchwald '11 (7 points) helped anchor the Aces' interior.
A total of nine Aces entered the scoring column, with Buchwald, Mike Robbins '12, Eric Green '11 and Luke Chambers '11 netting their first varsity points.
It was all Aces from start to finish. The Maroon & White used an early 7-0 run to set the tone, keyed by a three-pointer from Cohen and a driving reverse lay-up from Seltzer. After Upper Darby narrowed the margin to 9-6, Conor Foote '10 entered the game and gave the Aces defensive lift, forcing a turnover and taking an offensive foul to keep the Royals at bay.
The remaining quarters played out much the same way, marked by patient offense and defensive tenacity. The Dawg Pound fed off the players' opening night energy, chanting at fever pitch throughout the contest.
The Aces' stingy defense limited the Royals to just three second-half field goals and four single-digit quarters.
