After jumping out to a 19-8 first quarter lead, the Aces hit a funk against Conestoga and dropped a disappointing contest 54-49 on Wednesdy night. The squad looks to rebound on Friday night against Marple Newtown in a much-anticipated match-up at the Wachovia Center. Tipoff against the Tigers 4-3 (3-2) is scheduled for 9:45 PM, immediately after the Sixers-Lakers game. Marple Newton, much improved this season, is coming off of an upset victory over Upper Darby and an overtime win against Haverford. Tickets are still available for the game; click on the Wachovia Night banner on the homepage of aceshoops.com.
Wednesday's game against the Pioneers was a tale of two halves. The Aces' offense started hot with six threes in the first half, including three by Steve Meehan (9 points). The interior defense was strong, led by Andrew King and Kevin Escott, who helped limit Conestoga's 6'8 center Jake Cohen. In the second half, however, the Aces went cold. A seven point halftime lead quickly evaporated and despite the inspired play of Carl Johnson (13 points) and Alon Seltzer (9 points), the Pioneers remained within striking distance. Although the Aces still held a lead going into the fourth, missed opportunities and uncharacteristic poor shooting cost them down the stretch.
